Destinations guide for Nigerians
Facts are taken from government, embassy, WHO and UNESCO sources. Each section shows its sources; we only include points those sources support.
United Kingdom
| Where to live | The Home Office sets a higher living-cost figure for London (£1,529 a month) than for the rest of the UK (£1,171 a month), so cities outside London are generally cheaper for students. |
|---|---|
| Places to visit | UNESCO World Heritage sites include Stonehenge, Avebury and associated sites, the Tower of London and the City of Bath. |
| Medical care | Most visa holders staying more than 6 months pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (£776 a year for students, £1,035 for most others), which gives access to the NHS. |
| Education | Students need a CAS from a licensed sponsor, must show course fees and living costs, and pay a £558 visa fee (from 8 April 2026). |
| Cost | For a 1-year London course, the required living funds alone are £13,761 (9 × £1,529), which must be held for 28 days before applying. |
| Benefits vs disadvantages | Benefits: English-speaking; NHS access through the surcharge. Disadvantages: high up-front costs (visa fee, surcharge, proof of funds). |

Canada
| Where to live | Quebec sets its own student funds requirement; the federal CAD 23,448 figure applies to all other provinces and territories. |
|---|---|
| Places to visit | UNESCO World Heritage sites include the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks and the Historic District of Old Québec. |
| Medical care | You must be in good health on arrival. If an immigration medical exam was required, it is valid for 12 months and must still be valid on the day you enter Canada. |
| Education | You need a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI). The study permit fee is CAD 150. Changing your DLI after approval means a new application and new fees. |
| Cost | From 1 September 2026, a single applicant must show CAD 23,448 for living costs in the first year, plus tuition and travel. |
| Benefits vs disadvantages | Benefits: clear published requirements. Disadvantages: proof-of-funds amounts rise each year; officers can ask for medical exams and police certificates. |

| Cost | The visa application fee is paid when you apply; reciprocity fees for B and F visas for Nigerians are currently none. |
| Benefits vs disadvantages | Benefits: wide choice of universities and destinations. Disadvantages: in-person interview required for every applicant; short, single-entry visa validity since July 2025. |
